Lévis is the 7th largest city in Quebec, Canada, with a population of 145,000. Extending over an area of approximately 450 sq. km, the City was looking to optimize the management of pothole repair requests.

THE CHALLENGE

The City’s goal was to deliver greater transparency and efficiency to the way pothole repairs are reported, managed, and communicated through the various steps of the process: locating the potholes, creating an inventory, recording the workload, preparing status updates and producing reports for decision-makers. It was looking for a simple Web app that would help its staff manage the entire process of pothole repairs using the cell phone’s geolocation feature. Eventually, the app had to be integrated with the city’s website and ArcGIS Online too, using its existing FME Server.

THE SOLUTION

Having decided to leverage its FME platform and FME Server, the City approached Consortech to implement an automated workflow in FME that would trigger the repair process once a pothole has been reported online. Based on incoming geolocation data submitted through a Web application, this trigger would automatically generate a work order, send a series of status notifications to the residents once the repair begins, and deliver a weekly maintenance report to the City’s stakeholders. FME Server enables the City to keep systems updated and synchronized, and delivers timely actionable insights to on-site crews, residents, and key stakeholders, with little to no manual intervention.

THE VALUE

Automating the workflow paved way for an optimized and effective reporting service that increased public engagement, collaboration and operational efficiency. The City’s call reports dropped by almost 80%, which brought in a saving of 23 man-days! This has helped it to better allocate resources towards other high-value services, share information quickly to target routes that require the most attention and keep the public informed in a timely manner.

FME and FME Server allowed us to communicate with several unrelated platforms, which would have been unthinkable before the acquisition of FME.
